Do you know the difference between your Romans and your Venetians? Get up to speed with this essential guide to window blinds…

Vertical blinds

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are exactly how they sound — lengths of fabric that hang vertically down over a window. They can be tilted for privacy or light purposes, and the fabric can often be wiped or vacuumed clean, which makes them easy to maintain. Although popular in all rooms, vertical blinds are often used for patio and French doors and are less likely to collect dust than other types of blind.

Venetian blinds

Venetian Blinds

A basic Venetian blind is made from horizontal slats — usually metal or plastic but increasingly made of wood or bamboo — that sit one on top of the other. Unlike vertical blinds, Venetian blinds require a bit more maintenance as they collect dust but can be great at managing levels of sunlight in a room. While metal Venetian blinds might be more commonplace in an office space, wooden blinds can offer a cleaner, more refined look for the home.

Roller blinds

Roller Blinds

Although the most basic, and often cheapest, type of window blind on the market, roller blinds are also the most versatile. They can be easily made to fit almost any size of window and can be customised into any number of different colours and patterns to match your décor. Roller blinds can also be made with blackout lining — perfect for those who work nights or are looking for total darkness in their bedrooms.

Roman blinds

Roman blinds are soft folds of fabric that stack up evenly when pulled up and hang smooth when covering the window. They’re a more luxurious blind, and are great for adding a little depth, warmth or decoration to an otherwise cold-feeling room. However, it’s not possible to protect Roman blinds from moisture, which means they’re unsuitable for bathrooms.

Pleated blinds

Generally cheaper than most other types of blind on this list, pleated blinds offer the best of all worlds for those looking to combine the advantages of Roman, roller and Venetian blinds. They’re also easy to wipe clean, meaning maintenance is less of a concern and their warming qualities mean they can be used in almost any room of the house.
